Argentinian Football Icon, Maradona dies age 60
The football world is mourning the passing of one of the greatest players to have ever played the game. Diego Maradona passed away after suffering a heart attack at age 60 in his home in Buenos Aires. Maradona was released from the hospital just 2 weeks ago and was recovering from an operation on a brain blood clot earlier in November. The country of Argentina is grieving the death of one of its greatest heroes.
"El Diego" as he was known by fans, was born into poverty and grew up in the slums in the outskirts of Buenos Aires. Like many children born in poverty-stricken regions of Latin America, Maradona saw an opportunity to help his family escape poverty through success in sports. Maradona began his professional playing career at Argentinos Juniors, where he made his debut at 15 years old. His excellent performances on the field earned him a move to Argentinian giants, Boca Juniors and from then on his career propelled to stellar heights. Maradona's most memorable football performance was during the 1986 World Cup, in where he led Argentina to the World Cup title. In this tournament, he scored the infamous ‘Hand of God’ goal against England and also another goal which was considered the best goal of the century. This brought a great sense of pride and joy to the nation of Argentina and became an inspiration for the future generations of the beautiful game.
Maradona's legacy was not only enjoyed in Argentina, but also in Europe, specifically because of his time playing in Italy for Napoli. When Maradona arrived in Naples, Napoli was a low placed team in the league standings. Diego's extraordinary talents and leadership helped the team win four trophies including two Scudettos (Italian championships). Maradona's impact was so profound that the club had retired the No. 10 jersey and in honour of his death, rename their San Paolo stadium to honour the legacy Diego Maradona left in this city.
Off the football pitch, Maradona was plagued with drug addiction and numerous scandals.
This was the lifestyle that cut his career short and deteriorated his health up until his death. However, aside from the controversial scandals, Diego Maradona will be remembered for being a football genius and a heroic figure for Argentina.
